30 years of SECO Sensor Consult

Three decades of expertise, innovation and trust

Three decades is a remarkable achievement in today’s business world. What began 30 years ago with a vision, extensive expertise and entrepreneurial courage has developed into an established company that stands for expertise, reliability and innovation in ultrasonic technology. In our anniversary year, we at SECO Sensor look back with pride on our history and, at the same time, look to the future with confidence.

For us, 30 years of company history mean far more than just a number. They represent successful projects, technological developments, strong partnerships and, above all, the people who have supported and shaped the company over the years.

The Founding – The Start of a Success Story

The idea

Every successful business starts with an idea. The story of SECO Sensor began in 1996 with the buy-out of the product range of piezoceramic ultrasonic transducers for applications in air and gases from their employer at the time. With just one employee and three existing customers from the automation, medical technology and banknote management sectors, Thomas Möckl and Thomas Siebenhaar took the plunge and founded their own technology company.

Getting started

At that time, the company’s headquarters were located in a 50 m² space, sublet from Dr Lindner, within the Technology Centre run by the Coburg Economic Development Agency. SECO Sensor received its first major order, worth 96,000 DM, via a roll-fax machine. The market conditions for ultrasonic sensor technology were favourable, meaning that the team, product portfolio and customer base grew steadily right from the outset.

  • Expansion to include spirometry as an area of application

In the years that followed, further staff joined the production team. Our product portfolio expanded to include the manufacture of multi-transducer arrays and, in the early 2000s, spirometry. On the recommendation of an existing customer, our first spirometry client came to us; they continue to use ultrasonic flow measurement for lung function tests to this day.

Opening of a second site in Küps

In 2004, SECO Sensor opened its second site in Küps, Upper Franconia. As we are the sole supplier to our customers in some cases, this second site enabled us to meet their requirements for security of supply. The location was chosen because of its proximity to the homes of several employees.

  • New organisational structure

In 2006, SECO Sensor’s organisational structure underwent a fundamental change. Since then, the management and production teams have been supported by product managers and team leaders. This structure has proved its worth to this day.

    Global financial crisis

The product portfolio also expanded steadily. In addition to applications for presence detection and distance measurement, solutions were introduced for flow measurement in medical technology and gas meters, as well as for double-sheet detection and web edge control. This diversity of customers and fields of application helped us weather the global economic and financial crisis of 2008.

  • ISO 9001 Certification and Anemometry

In 2011, we entered the field of anemometry, another forward-looking business area. The rapid and accurate measurement of wind speed and direction using ultrasound offers numerous applications and continues to grow steadily to this day. Following the advice of our medical client, we also achieved our first ISO 9001 certification in 2011.

  • Refurbishment of the company’s headquarters in Coburg

In 2014, SECO Sensor also refurbished a building in Coburg, which remains the company’s headquarters to this day.

    Technological progress

Technological progress and new fields of application have shaped our development over the past three decades. Examples of this include our SC049 miniature transducer, ultrasonic transducers on glass feedthroughs for high-pressure applications, and the use of PEEK as a high-performance material.

  • Modernization and highest annual turnover

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 and 2022, SECO Sensor achieved the highest annual turnover in the company’s history, driven in particular by substantial deliveries of ultrasonic transducers for medical technology applications. During the same period, we modernised our marketing and sales strategy, revamped our website and product catalogue, and strengthened our presence at international trade fairs.

The people behind the success

Our employees

Behind every successful company are dedicated employees. Many of our colleagues have been part of our company for decades and, through their knowledge, ideas and daily commitment, make a significant contribution to our development.

Health and Safety

Ever since the company was founded, we have placed great importance on the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees. Right from the start, we established a comprehensive health management system, ensured support from our company doctor and brought in an external occupational safety specialist. Since 2025, we have been fully responsible for health and safety at work, with our own in-house specialists. We will continue to develop this area further in the future.

The SECO feeling

SECO Sensor is characterised by a special sense of community, underpinned by respect, open communication and team spirit. Joint events, training courses and staff outings foster a sense of togetherness, as does the diversity of the people who have shaped our company for the past 30 years.

Long-standing partnerships and customer trust

However, sustainable business success does not stem solely from technological expertise and committed staff. Equally important are stable relationships with customers, business partners, suppliers, research institutions and networks.

Many of our partnerships have been in place since the company was founded, for example with PI Ceramic and Martin Lotter GmbH. Together, we have carried out numerous projects and supported technological developments across a wide range of markets.

Looking ahead – Shaping the future

A changing world

An anniversary is always an opportunity to look to the future. The world is changing faster than ever before. Global crises, intense competition, digitalisation, artificial intelligence and increasing regulatory requirements present significant challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises. At the same time, these developments open up new opportunities for innovative companies.

New opportunities

At SECO, we see the changes of our time as an incentive to expand our expertise and tap into new potential. With an active global sales network, a modern digital presence and targeted marketing initiatives, we are working to open up new fields of application and build further customer relationships. At the same time, we are investing in modern manufacturing technologies, a state-of-the-art ERP system and robust organisational structures.

A key component of our strategy for the future is our systematic evolution from a component manufacturer to a systems supplier. By pooling our expertise in development, manufacturing and application engineering, we aim to offer our customers even more comprehensive, one-stop solutions in future, generate additional value and lay the foundations for sustainable growth.

Generational change

Continuity in corporate leadership is an essential prerequisite for the company’s long-term development. SECO will remain firmly in the hands of the two founding families in the future too. At the same time, the generational handover has laid the foundations for the next phase of the company’s development at an early stage. Eugen Gergert first became acquainted with SECO Sensor in 2001 whilst on an internship. After joining the company in 2006 as product manager for medical technology applications, he gradually took on more responsibility and was appointed to the management board in 2016. As part of a long-term transition plan, the founders, Thomas Möckl and Thomas Siebenhaar, gradually handed over their management responsibilities. Since 2024, Eugen Gergert has been leading the company as sole managing director and is responsible for the strategic and operational development of SECO Sensor.

With this combination of technological expertise, dedicated staff, long-term partnerships and a clear strategy for the future, we look forward to the coming years with confidence.
