Ultrasonic level measurement principle

Detect fill levels quickly and precisely with ultrasonic transducers

Ultrasonic level measurement is a reliable, non-contact method for determining fill levels in containers, tanks or silos. It is based on the principle of sound wave reflection. An ultrasonic sensor emits a signal and measures the time it takes for the signal to travel the distance. This measurement enables the level to be determined quickly and precisely without the sensor having to come into direct contact with the medium to be measured.

How ultrasonic level measurement works

The ultrasonic waves are generated by the ultrasonic transducer. On contact with the surface of the medium – be it liquid or bulk material – the waves are reflected and sent back to the sensor (pulse-echo operation). An ultrasonic transducer communicates with itself and acts as both a transmitter and a receiver. The time it takes for the signal to travel back and forth is detected and the fill level is determined precisely.

Advantages of ultrasonic level measurement

Non-contact measurement

Transducer measures without contact and does not come into contact with the medium from which the level is to be determined

Maintenance-free

No mechanical parts, no maintenance required, savings on spare parts and maintenance costs

Ranges from cm to m

The low maintenance requirements and long service life of the ultrasonic transducers result in long-term cost savings.

Environmental resistance

Precise measurement even in difficult environmental conditions such as dust, darkness, cold, heat or uneven surfaces
